Patricia McCorkle Crandall

My Mom said I began showing signs of being an art teacher prior to kindergarten. When I was five I began making lesson plans, assembling materials and gathering neighborhood children for art lessons in the back yard. Now I have retired after teaching middle and high school art for 33 years. It is finally time for me!

I began studying mechanical drawing in the 60s in high school and wanted to be an architect because I loved drawing and working with tools. That was considered unusual in the 60s. I continued to study architectural drawing for two more years in college and in my junior year, I changed my major to secondary art education. It was a safe choice for a female of that time. I ended up with a BS, a M.Ed. and a Specialist I degree in secondary art education. I have always been a frustrated architect. It is finally time for me!

My house portraits reflect my love of architecture. The stipple technique of pen & ink has become my signature. It softens the drawings and distinguishes them from the straight-edged harshness of architectural line drawings. The delicate shading accomplished with stipple makes the drawings more sophisticated, but still allows for strong contrast. Stipple is time consuming but I find it relaxing and creative.

I have just begun to paint for myself after so many years of teaching others. It is so refreshing and enlightening, I am experimenting with every color, style and technique I have studied and taught over the years. I can’t get enough. In painting, I don’t have a style to call my own, nor am I particularly looking to develop one. I am just releasing all the pent up art that has been inside of me for too many years.
